Granite, as we know it today, was formed over three hundred million years ago by the cooling of molten rock after it had erupted from volcanoes. There are three basic types of rock, which are sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous. Granite falls into the latter of these three categories. Igneous rock is defined as the rock that crystallizes from molten rock - otherwise known as magma - as it cools. The cooling occurs at a rapid rate, which does not allow much time for crystals to grow. This means that in the most rapidly cooling rock the crystals are microscopic. There are also cases where molten rocks deep within the earth's crust lose heat very slowly. This type of igneous rock contains larger crystals as they have had more time to grow.
The rocks formed within the cracks, or 'fractures' of igneous rocks contain the types of crystals that are mined for gemstones.
The granite rock itself has the features of being very durable, hard, and dense. These qualities have made it a very popular stone for many different uses. The natural beauty of the stone is frequently enhanced by the process of polishing, which is well suited to a stone with these properties (marble is also treated in the same way).
The use of granite as a decorative material has been recognized for thousands of years. The ancients used it for the construction of several Egyptian temples, and it is no surprise that it has stood the test of time, and is still used because of its combination strength and fine appearance.
Granite is popular very much because of the variety of patterns and colors which
it contains. This is because of its vast diversity of mineral configurations, including minerals such as mica, quartz, hornblende, and feldspar.
Amongst its uses are small-scale constructions such as kitchen worktops and bathroom fittings, through to its use for building roads, bridges and airports. In addition to its uses as a piece of stone, it also produces gravel, sand, ready-mix and asphalt concrete.
These can be used for all sorts of building projects, and you would be surprised at the number of constructions that are either made of granite, or contain it in some form. Part of the reason it is so popular is that it can be found in abundance around the world, and is quarried in numerous countries. Although it is not a cheap material, it would be a lot more expensive if there was a shortage of it due to supply and demand, as well as transportation costs.
